The badminton game was associated with Ancient Greece and Egypt. In the 18th century, this was played in India. When the British were ruling in India, badminton got famous among the officers the British. They brought this sport to England and named it “Badminton” in 1873. Lets find out some more about history of badminton.

History of Badminton in England

In 1875 these officers started the club named Folkestone. In the start, the game was played with sides ranging from 1 to 4 players, but then this game was made between two or four competitors.

In 1980 Hart and Bangle revised the rules. Following these rules, the Badminton Association of England published these rules officially in 1893 at a house called “Dunbar.”

The first badminton competition was the “All England Open Badminton Championship” in 1899.

This competition was between men double, women double, and mixed double. Single matches were added in 1900.

The rules of badminton double players were different as compared to single format games.

International Badminton Federation was established in 1934. The founding members of this federation were England, Canada, France, Denmark, Netherlands, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and New Zealand. India joined this federation in 1936 as an affiliate.

Firstly badminton background is associated with Europe, and with time, many Asian countries like China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, and India got a prominent place in this sport.

Initial Start of Tournaments in the History of Badminton

Badminton World Championship started in 1977. It happened every three years till 1983.

The world cup of badminton was started in 1979 and organized by IMG (International Management Group). This world cup continued from 1979 to 1997. It ceased for seven years. 

BWF brought it back as an individual tournament in 2005, but it ended in 2006.

Badminton was included in the summer Olympics in 1972 as a demonstration sport. Badminton was included as an exhibition sport in 1988 in the summer Olympics.

Single and double’s men and women have been included in every summer Olympics since 1992.

Mix was started in the 1996 summer Olympics.

Badminton Background in the USA

1996 was the year in which badminton got famous in the USA. The reason behind this is in 1995; the IBF organized a new concept tournament named “Hong Ta Shan Cup.” It was held in California. This tournament had high prize money.
