Badminton Rules

Badminton is one of the two sports in 2022. Approximately 54 million fans watch badminton at a professional level. Therefore badminton rules are defined by badminton world federation.

Badminton is mainly popular in Asian countries but has a tremendous European viewership.

Badminton rules depend upon the categories. Single-player match has different rules, and the double team has different ones.

In this article, we will discuss all badminton rules in detail.

Let starts:

Scoring System

Both Singles and doubles matches have 21 points in each set.

There are three sets in each game. This is also called the best of 3 games.

A point is considered on every serve. The winning point side will serve for the next point.

To win the game, a team must win by two clear points if the score is between 20-20.

If the score reaches 29-29, then the winner is the one who gets their 30th point.

If the birdie (shuttlecock) hits the ground in the opposing half of the court, including all lines, it is a point.

If a shot is taken outside of the court’s boundaries, if it hits the net, passes through/under it, or if a player hits the birdie twice using their racket, then a point can be conceded.

If the birdie (shuttlecock) hits the ground in the opposing half of the court, including all lines, it is a point.

If a shot is taken outside of the court’s boundaries, if it hits the net, passes through/under it, or if a player hits the birdie twice using their racket, then a point can be conceded.

Before you play a shot, players must wait for the birdie to cross the net.

Touching the net with your body or racket will result in a point being forfeited.

How to Serve

Players must hit the birdie at least below their waistline and serve diagonally into the opponent’s box.

Each player must remain still until the service is completed.

Singles the server begins from the right service courts and serves from there whenever they have an even number of points.

In doubles, the service will continue from the right side and continue to do so until the opposite team gets the point.

If your points are even then, you will serve from the right court.

If your points are odd, then you will serve from the left side of the court.

The server must not touch the net; otherwise, the service will be repeated.

The shuttle shall not be in hands when the racket touches the shuttle for the service.

Netting in Badminton

A net must be 1.55 meters above the surface of the court.

The depth of the net must be 760mm and 6.1 meters wide.

The top of the net shall be white, and the color of the net must be dark.

The net shall be firmly tight on both sides.

Serve Badminton Rules

The serve change rule was an old rule. Now only the single-serve rule is active.

Odd number demands to serve from the left and even number from the right.

Serve must be in the single line from the backside of the court when you are playing a double format game.

In a single-format game, you can serve until the end of the last line of the court from the backside.

Toss

Before the match, the toss shall be conducted.

The player who will win the toss can able to choose to serve first or choose the desired side for the first set.

The player can choose one thing either serve first or choose the side.

Single Player Rules

For a single player, there will be a single line from the sides of the code.

If the shuttle falls between the outer line and the inner line, then it will be the fault.

Double Players Rules

If double format, there is an outer line for the point.

A player can serve between an inner and outer line of the court from the sides.

A receiver of the service will be on the opposite side of the other court.

Two players will be on different courts during the serve.
